South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT has unveiled a national initiative to cultivate scientific talent amid growing demand for AI expertise and a projected decline in science and engineering students by 2027.

The plan includes naming 20 “national scientists” annually over the next five years, each receiving KRW 100 million (US$68,600) in research funding. The initiative also strengthens math and science education in elementary and middle schools while expanding scholarships for university students pursuing STEM fields.

The government aims to boost financial support for graduate students, raising scholarship access from 1.3% today to 10% by 2030. AI education across scientific disciplines will be enhanced to promote interdisciplinary innovation.

In addition, 5% of total government spending will be allocated to research and development projects. Officials said the measures are designed to create an environment where top researchers can focus on long-term innovation, keeping South Korea competitive in the fast-evolving AI and technology landscape.
