S. Korean game developer Nexon plans to establish a blockchain gaming ecosystem using the intellectual properties of one of its most popular games MapleStory, the company announced Wednesday.

Dubbed “MapleStory Universe,” the blockchain game will support a non-fungible token (NFT) economy where players can turn rewards won in the game into NFTs and trade them at an in-house marketplace. Transaction fees that occur during trades will be used to compensate contributors to “MapleStory Universe” and the company, according to the announcement.

“Our goal is to create a virtual world where NFTs can be transferred freely,” said Kang Dae-hyun, COO of Nexon. “We will build an integrated ecosystem where MapleStory NFTs can cross into and be used in other blockchain ecosystems around the world, while also accepting external NFTs into our own universe.”

Nexon joins other big name game developers in the country, like WeMade, Krafton and NCSoft, who have already jumped into launching blockchain games.
