Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education plans to teach middle school students of cryptocurrency starting this year, local media TokenPost reported Wednesday.

In an effort to expand students’ economic and financial literacy, the provincial education office has developed a curriculum that includes the latest issues, like cryptocurrency, personal information management and voice phishing prevention.

The new educational material on cryptocurrency will cover its definition, mining and buying of cryptocurrency, making appropriate cryptocurrency investment and the pros and cons of cryptocurrency.

“We chose to teach cryptocurrency to instill a proper sense of economy in students so that they do not approach it with unreliable or exaggerated information,” said Sohn Ki-hwa, middle school commissioner at the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education, to TokenPost in a telephone interview.

This is the first case of a provincial education office in Korea to teach cryptocurrency in schools.
